Concrete Deck & Startup at The McKinney Job

To start up, what you are seeing here is the arrival of our concrete crew. They are currently prepping our fiberglass pool to have a concrete deck put in. They show up at the crack of dawn to lay the "steel" (rebar) in a 12"x12" perimeter around our swimming pool. Once the steel is tied, they begin the process of pouring our concrete deck.

Completing Our Concrete Deck

What would any great fiberglass pool be without a beautiful concrete deck to compliment it? It’s almost be like ordering a pizza without some delicious toppings. It would still look great but why not throw in some great accessories pieces?

We sub-contract to one of the best concrete deck companies available in Dallas Fort Worth. This great crew of talented tradesmen pour and shape our concrete decks in as little as one day. As you can see from the image above, these guys arrive at the brink of daylight to prepare their work space. Their process starts by laying and tying 3/4″ rebar (also known in our industry as “steel”) in a 12″ x 12″ grid network around our fiberglass pool.

They also ensure that our concrete deck is properly grounded by running a copper bare wire around the perimeter of our pool deck. For our McKinney Job, this crew is pouring a standard concrete deck with a salt rock finish. This will create a “etched” texture on the top of our deck. It’s a subtle texture that adds a nice touch and gives it a little character.

The “Startup” Process

Our startup process is one of the most crucial pieces of our new fiberglass pool installation process! We have a great startup technician that arrives a day or two after your concrete deck is poured. Their objective is to clean out any remaining debris from the construction process. They also chemically treat your water and make it bright and blue for your first swim!

In order to aid in our cleanup process, we utilize a great product called “Revive!” It’s a perfect product created for startups and cleanups. Essentially it causes all of the dirt and yucky debris to fall to the bottom floor of your swimming pool. Our startup technician then vacuums out of this nasty debris using a pool vacuum.

If you are thinking about purchasing a fiberglass pool then now might be a great time to study up on some of the basics of pool chemistry. Pool ownership is a blessing and is something that we feel everyone should enjoy. To ensure that you enjoy your time in the water and not at your local Leslie’s asking chemical questions, we encourage your to read up on ways to chemically treat your water.

Our First Chemical Treatment

For the most part, pool chemistry is a fairly simple process that is made easier by the fiberglass pool that you just purchased. Comparing your swimming pool design to a gunite (concrete) pool – fiberglass pools require less chemical maintenance than their concrete counterpart. The reason being, our gel coat is designed to be smooth and easy to brush. It’s also non-porous unlike our gunite counterparts.

To provide a quick guided tour through what chemical levels you will need in your fiberglass pool, read below:

  • Total Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm
  • Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm
  • pH: 7.4 – 7.6
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 100 – 400 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid: 0 – 30 ppm
  • Copper: 0 ppm
  • Iron: 0 ppm

This may look like a complicated list of chemistry terms. We completely understand. However, there are lots of great test kits available to purchase that help you test your water. You can purchase test kits in the form of Test Strips or Drop Tests. They operate differently but perform essentially the same function.

As always, anytime that you have some questions about the chemical maintenance of your swimming pool, we advise that you contact a swimming pool professional. Sometimes the best pair of eyes are a trained pair of eyes that can answer your questions easily and know what to look for.

The Importance of a Good Startup

We have already hinted at it, but we really want to emphasize the importance of a good Chemical Startup! Some swimming pool builders, we are sad to say, lack in their customer service in this area. They often want to collect the final check after the pool is filled up and be gone. Not Fiberglass Pool Guyz! We maintain our communication with you through the startup process because we genuinely want you to enjoy your new fiberglass swimming pool!

We feel that it is important for you to enjoy your new backyard the moment that our crews are gone! You have worked hard to save the money, plan your backyard design and wait patiently for our crews to be gone. We completely understand that the first thing you’ll want to do is dive in – and that’s the idea!

Therefore, we emphasize that our startup process is quick and easy! After our concrete decks are poured, we have our startup technician scheduled to arrive at your backyard 1 – 2 days later. Don’t be too hasty now! We need to let that beautiful concrete deck finish drying before we ask our service technician to walk on it.

Our primary objectives during the Startup process are to: Chemically Treat Your Water & Cleanup Construction Debris. Once we’re done, you’re ready to jump in and enjoy your summer fun outdoors!

Signed, Sealed & Delivered – 7 Days
